York road closure delayed due to thunderstorm threat

A plan to close Station Road in York tonight (Monday, 1 June) has been postponed.

City of York Council have issued an urgent update to the works schedule.

As we reported earlier, four weeks of night-time roadworks which form part of the Station Gateway upgrade were due to start from 8pm this evening.

That plan has now been postponed for 24 hours.

A City of York Council spokesperson said: “Tonight (Monday 1 June) Station Road will not be closed, but a lane closure will be in place.

“With the weather forecast for thunderstorms and heavy rain overnight, our contractors won’t be able to resurface the road this evening.

“Other works will still be taking place in the area but these won’t require the road to close but there will be a lane closure tonight on Station Road.

“Traffic lights will be in place as seen in recent weeks. This means two way traffic will be possible tonight.

“It also means buses will be able to use their normal routes. Tea Room Square and the short stay car park remain closed with the temporary arrangements for taxis and Blue Badge holders in place.

“Our expectation is that the closures will be in place tomorrow night as planned. This won’t affect the timeline for the closures or completion of this package of works.”
