A York theatre group are bringing audiences behind the curtain of community theatre – in a new documentary series.
Inspired By Theatre are offering an exclusive look into the making of their upcoming production of Rent at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre (Thursday 10 to Saturday 12 April) in No Day But Show Day: The Road to RENT.
The seven-part documentary will give a glimpse inside the rehearsal room, the creative process and the experiences of the cast and crew bringing the beloved musical to the stage.
Aiming to shine a spotlight on community theatre, the documentary series will feature interviews and behind-the-scenes footage of rehearsals, set-building, band call, and even the final moments before opening night.
“This is more than merely a behind-the-scenes content dump; it’s an invitation into our community,” says Dan Crawfurd-Porter, producer of Inspired By Theatre.
“We want to show the world what community theatre truly represents: people coming together to create something extraordinary.”
No Day But Show Day will release episodes in the lead up to show week in April, with the final episode releasing a week after opening night.
The first episode will premiere on Thursday 6 February 2025 at 7pm.
All episodes will be approximately 15 minutes long and available to watch on Inspired By Theatre’s YouTube channel, with additional content available on their social media channels.
The series is directed by University of York student Emily O’Gorman, following her tenure at National Geographic at The Walt Disney Company, with cinematography by fellow student, Mia Scudds.
“Directing this project is and has been such an incredible experience,” said O’Gorman.
“Documenting a show as revolutionary as Rent is an opportunity in itself, but to be able to tell the story of a growing theatre company and the passion that drives them is really what is so special.”
Tickets for Rent at Joseph Rowntree Theatre are £19 and available via the theatre’s website.
