A York student café and bar has been given a low food hygiene rating and has been told ‘major improvement necessary’.
The Courtyard at Derwent College on the University of York Heslington campus scored just one out of five after an inspection by City of York Council last month.
While it was judged ‘very good’ for cleanliness, it fell down on the two other criteria.

For food hygiene and safety, The Courtyard was judged: ‘Improvement necessary’. This means: “Some major non-compliance with statutory obligations – more effort required to prevent fall in standards.”
And for confidence in management, it was judged: ‘Major improvement necessary’. This means: “Varying record of compliance. Poor appreciation of hazards and control measures. No food safety management system.”
The findings were updated yesterday (Thursday, 23 December).
The Courtyard is a café and bar which opens till 11pm every night. It also hosts a range of events, including quizzes to karaoke, and has a beer garden.
A spokesperson for the University of York Students’ Union (YUSU), which runs the Courtyard kitchen, said:
“The issues raised by the inspection last November primarily focused on record keeping and other administrative issues, and since then we have implemented a number of changes and improvements, including further staff training and updating our procedures and records.
“Following those changes we have asked for a reassessment of the kitchen facilities at the earliest opportunity.
“Food safety in our kitchens is our priority and we are committed to ensuring we adhere to the highest health and safety standards across all our catering venues.”
