This was the scene on a key York bridge after intensive rain earlier this week.

Lendal Bridge was partially flooded on Monday, with drivers having to slow to a near crawl to get through the standing water.

Pedestrians had to try to avoid being hit by the spray from cars and buses.

The water was also cascaded down the stone steps leading to Dame Judi Dench walk and the river walkway – as this video by David Dunning shows.

But City of York Council say it was a temporary problem which they are sorting this week.

The council carried out repairs to the surface of Lendal Bridge last year, but that work didn’t cause the problem, according to experts.

Dave Atkinson, head of highways and transport at the council, told YorkMix: “The condition of all York’s roads is assessed on a regular basis (annually and monthly) and repair work is carried out based on this assessment, which adheres to national best practice guidelines.

Water was cascading down the steps

“Each year our teams are responsible for thousands of repairs, along with significant projects to proactively improve road and paths, preventing issues developing later on.

“The council takes every step necessary to ensure problem areas are identified and repairs are carried out as quickly as possible.

“Urgent localised repairs took place on Lendal Bridge last September. The recent surface water flooding is a result of a blocked gully due to heavy rainfall and is not linked to the recent repair works.

“Our draining teams are being deployed to the area to unblock the gully this week.”
