It’s the last day of the last race meeting of the season.
Which also means it’s your last chance to win… so who should you back? Over to our tipster, Mr Dick Turpin…
What a season! In 2018, York has continued to maintain its dominance at the top of racing’s hierarchy, writes tipster Turpin.
Record crowds, record prize money, and a record number of Group One and Pattern races.
One of Turpin’s highlights was watching Sea Of Class demolish a highly-rated field to conquer the Yorkshire Oaks with a display that suggested the filly could grab the Arc in October.
She came heartbreakingly close to that victory last week. Easily the best horse in the field, she was beaten by a near-impossible draw in the Longchamp event. We can only hope we’ll see her in action again at Knavesmire next season.
Stradivarius’s brace of wins in the Yorkshire Cup and Lonsdale Cup were early-season highlights too. And who can forget Roaring Lion’s impressive performance in taking the £600,000 first prize in the Juddmonte International. What a summer it has been.
Today’s season-closing meeting features a wide-open Coral Sprint Trophy Handicap (3.15), and an equally intriguing and highly competitive Rockingham Stakes (2.40).
The selection in the sprint (3.15) is Al Qahwa, whose showing in the Ayr Silver Cup is justification for David O’Meara’s five year-old to be the likely favourite.
A course-and-distance winner last season, Tommy Taylor represents very good each-way value. Strong claims can be made, too, for Perfect Pasture, Flying Pursuit, and last year’s winner, Teruntum Star.
But if you’re looking for longshot value e.w., it might be worth a small investment on Kimberella, who will have come on for his plucky seventh in the Ayr Gold Cup last month.
In the Rockingham (2.40), everything looks right for Leyburn magician Karl Burke’s Constant. This progressive youngster has everything going for him, after an impressive showing at Hamilton last time out, beaten only by East, a subsequent Group Three winner. The testing ground will suit too.
Until next season, folks!
