Fire crews from York and Huntington were called out to a residential address in Dunnington at 12.18pm today.

The fire had started in a microwave oven, but was out on their arrival.

Crews carried out an inspection. An elderly woman casualty was taken to hospital by the ambulance service suffering from smoke inhalation.

How one man saved Flying Scotsman for the nation

An interesting article has popped up on the BBC News website about Alan Pegler.

He saved iconic locomotive Flying Scotsman for the nation. Alan was a “swashbuckling buccaneer of a character”, who couldn’t bear the thought of the engine being scrapped.

So – he bought it for £3K, set about restoring it – and by 1968 it was “the only steam locomotive running on Britain’s railways”.

Sadly though the locomotive ended up ruining him financially. But without his intervention the fabulous Flying Scotsman, in the National Railway Museum collection since 2004, would have been lost forever.

They’re preparing for a TV first from York tonight.

News show Inside Out will broadcast live to all three of the BBC’s northern regions from the National Railway Museum.

It focuses on the rail chaos which has beset the region this summer, and features an interview with transport secretary Chris Grayling, where he apologises for the disruption.
