A York shop is set to close at the start of next month – to the dismay of many loyal customers.
Farmfoods on Front Street in Acomb will close on Sunday, 1 December according to a notice placed on the door.
The note adds: “Sorry for any inconveniences! (Prices will drop in the coming weeks)”.
Farmfoods, a supermarket specialising in frozen foods, has been on Front Street for many years.
The news of its closure was a blow to many shoppers. Commenting on social media, they highlighted its good value and helpful staff.
Acomb resident Eddie Vee has suggested that local people mount a campaign to save it.
He told YorkMix: “Farmfoods is a great shop because you always get top brand names at the best prices.
“It’s one of the most consistent low-priced shops for basics like bread, ham, cheese, potatoes and milk but also for treats like ice creams and chocolate bars.
“Not only that you also get regular leaflets delivered to your home with more money saving vouchers which keep you informed of the best buys – like recent deals on bulk buys of sirloin steaks.
“I think an online campaign backed up with a signature petition might just persuade them to stay open a bit longer – I mean there is nowhere where their prices on big name brands are matched.
“I hope the decision is reversed as a lot of local families will see big increases in their weekly shop outlay if it does close!”
Farmfoods announced earlier this year it was on an expansion drive, with a target of opening between 20 and 30 new stores a year, with a particular focus on London.
The company says its annual turnover has just surpassed £1 billion for the first time.
However, according to Wikipedia, in recent years the 70-year-old family-run grocer has been “opening larger stores and closing smaller ones as they enlarge their non food range”.
There is another Farmfoods in York, at Clifton Moor.
