Route developments on the East Coast mainline will see an extra six million seats a year for rail passengers.
LNER has welcomed a new industry timetable for December 2025, aimed at improving rail connections across Yorkshire.
The updates, which shall be finalised by next summer, will see timing changes to almost all trains calling at York.
Faster journeys will be introduced between Edinburgh and London, cutting travel time between the two capitals to close to four hours.
The changes will also see an increase in services between Newcastle and London, from two trains per hour to three.
There are also more trains between Harrogate, York and Leeds, both during rush hour and on Sundays.
Developed through collaboration between Network Rail, train operators and the Department for Transport, the new timetable will bring an extra 16,000 seats per day, and an additional 37 LNER services each weekday.
Hopes for the future
LNER hopes that the faster journeys between Edinburgh and London, paired with the increased public desire to cut climate emissions, could see the rail’s share of the travel market between the capital cities rise to 60%.
Managing director of LNER David Horne said: “This transformational timetable will guarantee thousands of extra seats each day on the East Coast route, cutting journey times and providing much needed capacity.
“With this new timetable, we’ll be able to serve many destinations more regularly and contribute at least an additional £108 million per year of economic value to the UK, while supporting greener and more sustainable journeys.
“We’re delighted to be kick-starting the transformation of our timetable by significantly increasing services to Bradford from May 2025, in what will be a very special year for the city and wider area.”
