The runway at Leeds Bradford Airport has reopened and operations are now resuming.

An airport spokesperson said: “Due to a backlog of departing flights, some disruption is expected to continue throughout the day.

“For the latest updates on flight times, customers are advised to contact their airline directly.

“Security screening will close at 22.45 this evening, so all departing customers should ensure they arrive at the airport before this time.

Leeds Bradford Airport runway closed until further notice

Photograph: Leeds Bradford Airport

Leeds Bradford Airport said its runway would remain closed “until further notice” while it continues to mitigate heavy snowfall.

In an update on its website, the airport said access through security may be temporarily restricted due to the number of customers already in its departure lounge.

It added its team were “working tirelessly” to clear the falling snow and it would reopen “as soon as it is safe to do so”.

The airport had earlier said it was hoping to reopen its runway at midday.

Manchester Airport said it had re-opened its runways after previously being hampered by heavy snow.

Delays to some departures and arrivals are still possible as staff de-ice aircraft and clear walkways, the airport said on its website.

Avoid dangerous riverside paths, says York council

If you’re out and about in York today, take extra care, leave longer for your journey – and avoid riverside paths.

That’s the message from City of York Council.

It has issued this message today: “The combination of recent floodwaters still receding and a layer of silt and mud left behind has made riverside paths especially dangerous, preventing the usual cleaning and gritting operations.

“With sub-zero temperatures forecast to continue for the coming days, surfaces will freeze and thaw creating extremely slippery conditions.

“Please consider whether your journey is absolutely necessary and take additional care when travelling, allowing extra time for any journeys you do need to make.

“The council’s recovery teams are working hard to respond to the weather and flooding, prioritising the gritting of main routes, and clearing city centre footpaths.”

The council can’t clear Marygate until the Environment Agency remove their sandbags, “which they advise us will be on Monday. St George’s Field Coach and Car Park also remain closed until silt can be moved.”

James Gilchrist, director of environment, transport and planning said: “We would like to thank our teams who are working hard to get the city moving again following the recent flooding and bad weather.”

Updated ‘do not travel’ advice from Transpennine Express

Photograph: TransPennine Express

Further to our previous post, TransPennine Express has issued an updated ‘do not travel’ warning

Here’s what the company is saying, as at 12.12pm (Sunday, 5 January):

TransPennine Express is urging customers not to travel on the following routes today : Manchester Airport – Glasgow Central and Edinburgh via Preston and Manchester Airport – Leeds – York and Newcastle.

This is due to no bus replacement services being able to run for the planned engineering work due to the heavy snowfall which is severely impacting roads and has led to the suspension of bus operations across the Pennines and North West.

For all other routes across the TPE network customers are advised to delay their journeys until later on today and should be prepared for major disruption and possible postponement of journeys.

Customers with tickets across the affected routes can defer their journeys, and any tickets already purchased for travel today (Sunday 5 January) will be valid on Monday 6 January or a full refund can be obtained at tpexpress.co.uk/help/refunds.

Chris Nutton, Major Projects & TRU Director for TransPennine Express said: “We are urging anyone today across the affected routes to defer their travel or claim a refund.

“As the Met Office predicted, snowfall of up to 40cm has impacted our network and the logistics behind it, such as the highways accessing our maintenance depots.”
