Not everyone is disliking the floods.

This otter was revelling in the fast-flowing waters of the River Ouse in York city centre today.

These great pictures were taken by riverside resident Michael Neal.

“I was just gazing into disaster and an otter slides by!” he said.

Otters have been spotted in York’s rivers a few times in recent years. A year ago, we carried a video of a couple of the animals frolicking in the Foss.

Tadcaster needs your help to clean up after the floods

Tadcaster needs help to clean up after the flood waters left a nasty mess.

Kirsty Poskitt of Tadcaster Community Action Group says donations, big and small, of cleaning equipment like mops and buckets would be very helpful.

Listen to her appeal on YorkMix Radio on this link

“Back in 2015, our friendly Tescos crew drove up with a truck that was just full of buckets and mops and that kind of thing.

“So there was enough to go around and we fully totally appreciate if somebody’s got a mop and bucket and they bring it down and they hand it over. That would be great.

“But what’s really helpful if any of the supermarkets can just give us a load of buckets and cloths and mops.”

Floodwaters encroach on Museum Gardens in York. Photograph: Luke Davis

Luke Davis reports

Flood levels have peaked but many riverside areas are still inaccessible.

The river is now encroaching into Museum Gardens, with this area submerged.

Dame Judi Dench Walk next to Lendal Bridge is flooded, with equipment pumping water out of the river to improve conditions.

The fast flowing current of the Ouse is one of the first things pedestrians walking across the bridge are noticing and, as always, it is advised that pedestrians stay well away from the river.

Our photographer Richard McDougall has been touring around York again this morning to get a new set of pictures.

His photographs show the Ouse at pretty much the peak of its latest flood. The waters are expected to now start slowly receding.

The latest river level forecast for the River Ouse in York

Right, let’s start with the good news. The worst, for York, appears to be over.

Updated: According to the Viking Recorder, which monitors levels of the River Ouse in York city centre, the river peaked at 11am today at 4.58m.

That is around a metre lower than the early forecasts – which had they come true, would have set a new record level.

City of York Council’s flood defences, including sandbags and a pumping station at Tower Gardens, have comfortable held.

They have been in touch with vulnerable residents offering them support. You can read more about that here.
