This was the scene in a York park early on Saturday morning.
Vandals had trashed Tower Gardens – turning over tables, upturning the planters – and ripping the trunk off the grass elephant.
Paul Willey, who discovered the mess, tweeted he was “utterly fuming”, describing it as “utter mindless vandalism”.

Together with some of the York BID (Business Improvement District) team, he cleared up the mess and restored order.
He said: “Just don’t understand the ‘mindset’ to smash everything up. The BID do such good things for everyone’s benefit.. Just absolutely infuriates me.”
One of this summer’s initiatives by the York BID (Business Improvement District), the grass animals are found across the city centre.
They include a bear, lion, dog and the word ‘YORK’ outside the Minster. Some of these are taken inside at night.
