A York fish and chip shop is already open and serving again – only hours after being closed by fire.

As YorkMix reported last night, fire crews were called to the Mr Chippy building on Church Street at 5.55pm.

The fire was in a third floor storage room. Firefighters used hose reel jets to put out the blaze.

One man was treated for smoke inhalation. The blaze caused 80% fire damage and 100% smoke damage to the room.

Max Potts, who runs Mr Chippy owner, said on social media: “We would like to reassure you that there was no issue with our fish frying equipment or methods and the fire was contained to an upper floor room where the fire originated.

“Thankfully, all of our customers and staff were able to evacuate safely and no one was hurt.”

He was in the shop early today getting it ready, and was open and frying by 11.30am.

And this weekend, for York Residents’ Festival, Mr Chippy is running a ‘buy the fish and get the chips free!’ deal for all York residents.

It’s valid only with a YorkCard or proof of address – more here.
