The driver of a car which plunged off Scarborough pier last week has died of his injuries.
The white Mini Cooper car he was driving left the town’s East Pier, overturned, and became submerged in the water last Friday.
He was rescued from the sea in an operation involving the coastguard, lifeboat, fire service, ambulance and the police.
He had been in a critical condition in hospital ever since.
Today a North Yorkshire Police spokesperson gave this update: “We are sad to report the death of a 70-year-old local man who was involved in a single-vehicle collision on Scarborough’s East Pier last Thursday at 7.18pm.

“He passed away on Monday evening in the presence of his family.
“He is not being named at this time.”
