A new era is coming to a landmark pub in York.
As we reported on Monday, The Maltings has a new owner who is planning to turn it into The Dubliner York – an Irish-themed bar.
Shaun and Maxine Collinge sold the Tanners Moat pub after 32 years of running The Maltings. They created one of the city’s best pubs, one that received national acclaim for the range and quality of its real ales.
New owner Daniel Van Hymus now wants to make it one of the city’s best pubs again – albeit in a very different way.
He went into the pub business last year, transforming a former nightclub on Newcastle’s Quayside into The Dubliner after being inspired by the pubs in Ireland’s capital.
It’s hosts live music every night, and by all accounts has been a roaring success.
In his introduction video, above, Daniel says: “After my hometown in Newcastle, there’s no place we’d rather open a second site, and we can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on.
“Whether you’re looking for a pint of Guinness by the fire or a sing and a dance by the stage, this is the pub for you.”
YorkMix caught up with Daniel to find out more about what he’s planning…
What can York expect?
A taste of Temple Bar on Tanners Moat, with live music seven days a week, in an atmosphere like no other. And of course perfectly poured pints of Guinness.
Our site in Newcastle is the most followed Irish Bar in the World on TikTok, that’ll give you a great idea of what we intend to bring to York.
When will you open?
We’re working round the clock to get The Dubliner open as quickly as possible for the people of York, and those travelling here over Christmas.
As soon as we can nail down an opening date, we’ll let everyone know on our social pages.

Will there be many changes to the pub?
In terms of the aesthetic of the pub: we’re going to start by brightening up the outside of the bar, before a re-fit inside, maintaining the original 1930s features that gives the pub character, and of a course installing a stage in the corner.
When it comes to the how the pub is operated, it’s safe to say the no singing rule is out the window. However, great home cooked food will remain on the menu.
There was the option to continue trading as The Maltings, but we didn’t want to offer a watered down version of what Shaun and Maxine had created over 32 years – we’re here to do our very best to add value and bring something different to York’s pub scene, in our own way.
How many jobs are being created?
All the existing staff from The Maltings have been kept on and paid through the re-fit and handover, with another 10 jobs created on top.
Plus over £150k+ invested into York’s local music scene each year, to support local music.
