The team behind one of the best-loved pubs in York have pulled their last pint, served their last meal and moved out.
Shaun and Maxine Collinge have said goodbye to The Maltings on Tanner’s Moat after 32 years.
They have sold the pub and are moving on to the next chapter.
“Aye, it’s the end of an era,” Shaun said as they moved everything out today (Monday).
The pub is now closed, with the blinds pulled down.
He shared one last Tweet yesterday, saying: “After 32 years it’s time to ring the bell and hang up my beer towel one last time.
“It’s been a pleasure…”
Shaun and Max took over in October 1992 when Maxine’s mum Anita Adams bought the Tanners Moat pub from Bass.
What was the Lendal Bridge Inn was promptly rechristened The Maltings, given a new look and started three decades at the top.
With a commitment to the very best beer and proper home-cooked food from the Dragon’s Pantry, the new pub soon won an army of fans both in York and further afield.
It became a permanent fixture in the Campaign for Real Ale’s Good Beer Guide.
And The Maltings has won too many awards to count – including being named Britain’s Cask Ale Pub of the Year twice in a row by licensed trade bible the Morning Advertiser.
Publicans and pubgoers lined up to pay tribute. “They should build a statue on Tanner’s Moat! All the very best to you both. Enjoy whatever comes next,” said the Waggon And Horses on Lawrence Street.
“There are very few pubs that deserve the word legendary but yours was one of them,” Phil Harvey wrote on X.
“I’ve been visiting for over 30 years and it was always a great experience with an excellent atmosphere, great beer and unforgettable chips! Whoever takes it on next has a lot to live up to!”
And the former editor of the Good Beer Guide Roger Protz wrote: “You’ve done a brilliant job at the Maltings, an icon of the York beer scene! You’ll be missed. All the best for your retirement!”
