One of York’s most iconic streets has been made into a cake – and it’s pretty spectacular.
Custom cake maker Tasha King, from Valkyrie Cakes, has created a deliciously delightful two-tier cake of the Shambles, which features some of the street’s popular small businesses.
And topped off with – what else, of course – York Minster!
The cake was commissioned for York St. John University from software company TechnologyOne.

The brief was simply ‘City of York’ and Tasha was given free reign on the design.
The cake is two-tiers of vanilla sponge, with vanilla buttercream and a white chocolate ganache.
The businesses-in-cake-form are York Ghost Merchants, The Potions Cauldron, The Shop That Must Not Be Named, Hebden Tea Shop, Ye Old Shambles Tavern, Shambles Kitchen, The Cheesecake Guy, The Society of Alchemists, York Vikings, and a wizard figurine for the Wizard Walk of York.
“There was a little more ‘forward planning’ involved than usual with this cake, as I wanted to get permission to replicate the shopfronts of the businesses I planned to include in the design,” said Tasha.
“Thankfully they were all more than happy to be created in cake form! It was very difficult to create a shortlist of which businesses to include – there’s such an eclectic variety on the Shambles.”
The process of creating the actual cake from start to finish took approximately 10 to 12 hours.

“The reaction has been lovely,” said Tasha. “My client got in touch afterwards to let me know they had seen photos of the cake and said it was brilliant. York St John University loved it!”
Tasha, 34, owns and runs Valkyrie Cakes from her home village of Bishopthorpe, where she currently lives with her partner Adam, and her two daughters and stepson.
Tasha started Valkyrie Cakes three years ago. She started baking for her children and then her friends and their children.
“I had a couple of cakes go ‘viral’, and then it all took off from there,” said Tasha. “I’ve been incredibly lucky to be able to make it my full time job, with the unwavering support from my amazing clients, friends and family.”
One of her viral cakes includes a Joe Exotic cake she made for a close friend.
Tasha also creates wedding cakes, vegan and gluten free cakes.
