York’s housing crisis has been brought into sharp relief today as one of the city’s top estate agents revealed he has only one home left on his books.
Simon Cartwright, of Indigo Greens, told YorkMix Radio he had ‘never’ known a situation like this.
He said: “It’s still busy in the respect of people looking to to buy property. And so anything that’s coming up and it’s on the on the market at the right price is selling straight off.
“That’s resulted in us not having anything left apart from one house.”
He said he hadn’t known anything like it: “Even when I was employed with other agents in York or self employed, I’ve never been in this situation”.
House prices have been going up in York, partly as an effect of the pandemic. “But at the same time, there hasn’t been a great deal of new stock coming on the market, especially throughout this year.

“Because of the staggered stamp duty endings, that’s driven the prices up as well.”
He said it was hard to predict what will happen to house prices in the coming year.
“You’ve got people saying that things can’t go on this way and prices will drop. But others are saying whilst there isn’t stock coming onto the market, it will keep prices high. It’s obviously classic supply and demand.”
