York Mind has pledged to continue to support people experiencing mental ill-health throughout the coronavirus crisis, by providing vital services either online or on the telephone.
York Mind, which normally operates from two buildings in Clifton and on Clarence Street, has responded to the crisis by moving all staff members to home working.
The charity, which has been operating in the city since 1986, has adapted its services so they can continue to support current clients – as well as responding to the increased numbers of people now experiencing feelings of anxiety, low mood and isolation due to the pandemic.
Over the coming months, York Mind will offer a combination of group-based and one to one support to both adults and young people, all of which will be delivered remotely.
This will include:
- Telephone counselling for adults, young people and carers
- Text ‘drop-in’ service for Young People
- One to one emotional wellbeing support (online / telephone)
- Online Mindfulness, Managing Stress + Anxiety & Resilience courses
- One to one coaching (online / telephone)

In response to the changing employment situation in the city, they are also accepting referrals for the Action Towards Inclusion employment project, focusing particularly on building skills and confidence to improve readiness for employment.
They have also increased their advocacy service for those affected by Covid-19, particularly around access to benefits, housing, financial help and mental health services.
Alyson Scott, Chief Executive of York & Doncaster Mind, said:
We aim to continue our work for people experiencing mental ill-health and offer an additional support for people with specific anxieties around Covid-19.
We know that for some people, this may be their first experience of poor mental health. We want them to know that we are ready to help.
Self-referrals to the new services can be made from Wednesday 8th April through the charity’s website.
Whilst affiliating to the national ‘Mind’ brand, York Mind are an independent charity, and therefore greatly rely on the support of the community in York to be able to continue & develop their life-changing work.
