Young people aged 16 and 17 can now walk in and get their Covid jab in York
The call has gone out to 16 and 17 year olds: Come and get your jab.
The main York Vaccination Centre at Askham Bar is now administering a dose of the Pfizer vaccine to 16 and 17-year-olds.
Talking to Ben and Laura on YorkMix Radio this morning, Dr Mike Holmes, chair of Nimbuscare, the primary care group overseeing the vaccination programme in the city, said this age group should get jabbed as soon as possible.
“Our staff have had additional training to make sure they can deal with all the issues relating to this age group.
“And it has started already – we’ve started sending appointments by text. But actually, they can just walk in and have the jabs as well. In fact, my own son who’s 16, walked in and had his done yesterday.”
This walk-in service is not limited to 16 and 17 year olds – anyone can do the same. Most people will get a text, said Dr Holmes, but if you don’t just call in and get vaccinated.

Askham Bar is open daily, 8am to 8pm. And there are pop-up clinics, including one at Jorvik Medical Practice on Stonebow this Saturday (14 August) from 9am to noon.
At the moment 16 and 17-year-olds are only being given one vaccine, Dr Holmes said, and then this will be evaluated: “Potentially, that advice may change.”
What about those under 16? “I don’t know whether we will vaccinate under 16 yet,” he told Breakfast Mix. “My suspicion is, we probably will. But we haven’t heard anything official, and we need to wait for that before we can do anything.”
