City of York Council’s i-Travel York programme has officially launched the region’s first multi-modal journey planner to help residents, visitors and businesses navigate their way around York easily at a touch of a button.

Compatible with all desktop computers, smartphones and tablet software, the planner – available at the i-Travel York wesbsite – provides users with the best options for walking, cycling, public transport, including Park and Ride, and driving routes by simply typing in a destination point.

Building on the Traveline Yorkshire offer, the planner incorporates walking, cycling and driving options all in one place – a first for the Yorkshire region.

Providing the latest navigation advice, the planner also helps plan trips to or from anywhere in the UK to destinations within 15 miles of York.

Cllr Merrett, Cabinet Member for Transport, Planning and Sustainability, said: “York’s new Journey Planner is a fantastic resource for the city, helping residents, visitors and businesses to get around more easily.

“Not only is this a first for Yorkshire but York’s planner is also the first in the UK to offer door-to-door journey planning incorporating Park & Ride in a single step.

“The planner aims to encourage the use of sustainable and active travel modes, such as walking, cycling or public transport and help cut congestion by offering comparative information on trips such as time, distance, cost and CO2 emissions.”

Craig Nelson, associate with Steer Davies Gleave, developers of the Journey Planner, said: “By integrating real-time and journey delay information, we’ve also made the planner ideal for use on the move.

“Built using an innovative responsive design, the planner automatically adapts to whatever device you are using – whether that’s a smartphone, tablet or a desktop PC.

“The planner is very much York focused and has been built using local knowledge from residents. It utilises a community based mapping system – known as crowd sourced data – so that journey options can be continually improved.”

The new planner is supported by the council’s four-year i-Travel York initiative, made possible by £4.6 million of government funding which the council successfully bid for in 2011.
