York’s unofficial car parks, number 1: Exhibition Square
When you look at Exhibition Square in York, what do you think?
What a wonderful example of public realm, complete with its fountain, art gallery and statue of artist William Etty?
What a great family-friendly place to relax, enjoy an ice cream and gaze at York Minster peeking over Bootham Bar?
Or… what a cracking place to stick the old motor for free?
That last thought seems to be the one that occurred to these drivers, who all dumped their cars in Exhibition Square yesterday (Wednesday).
Resident Gwen Swinburn spotted at least five cars parked around the fountain, and another three stuck next to the city walls in Exhibition Square.
She tweeted York council about it, saying: “This has to stop – one of our only squares being used as a free car park.
“It’s time that we had bollards up here, it’s a free for all… parking madness.”
Her pictures were the perfect way to launch our occasional new series, York’s Unofficial Car Parks.
Have you spotted an unofficial York car park, where people are leaving their vehicles where they shouldn’t? Send your pix to [email protected], via WhatsApp or on our social media channels.
Though you do get unauthorized parking here, mostly it’s people serving the Art Gallery, particularly when exhibitions change over or other maintenance issues.
Well car drivers will park anywhere even if there is a perfectly good car park not more than 100 metres away all because the distance to were they want to be is 10 metres nearer this includes parking on the grass or with in 10 metres of a road junction
It is a pity that the council do not have the traffic wardens to police the parking in York
Instead of the city of York Council tax payers pick up the bills for repair of the damage done by the motorists parking anywhere they like
