York’s newest theatre company has brought an intimate musical to the city.
The White Rose Theatre is staging The Last Five Years at Theatre@41 until Saturday (12 November).
The show, by Jason Robert Brown, tells the story of Cathy and Jamie as they weave through the trials and tribulations of their relationship and marriage – with Cathy’s side of the story starting at the end and Jamie’s starting at the beginning.
The Last Five Years, which is entirely sung through, will bring simplicity and raw emotion to the York theatre.
With just two cast members (playing Cathy and Jamie), and minimalist staging, the focus will be on the story and the music.
Musical director John Atkin will be leading his live band through the impressive score – which offers beautiful ballads, upbeat pop songs, and stunning harmonies between the two leads.
Director Claire Pulpher, who is also playing Cathy, says: “Bringing The Last Five Years to life has always been my biggest ambition.
“To be able to do this is one thing – but to do it with John at the musical helm and the incredible Simon Radford taking on the role of Jamie is going to be pure magic.
“I first saw this show in a pub in Edinburgh when I was 20 – and it’s never, ever left me. It’s a show that everyone should see at some point, whether you’re a musical fan or not.
“The story is so relatable and emotive – and so beautifully captured by Jason Robert Brown.”
The Last Five Years will play at Theatre@41 in Monkgate from Wednesday 9th November until Saturday 12th November, with performances daily at 7.30pm and a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets are priced at £15 per person, or £12 for concessions (under 16s and over 65s).
