A brand new escape room is opening in York this weekend – and it’s specially designed for kids!
Star Street Escapes, on Poppleton Road, will be York’s first escape room designed purely for children. It will open on Saturday 13 April.
It is a new venture by Dawn Murphy, who is also the owner of Star Street Children’s Salon.
“The salon has a large room at the rear we have been using for parties, but I wanted to do something extra with it as I felt it was underused,” Dawn told YorkMix.
“I absolutely love escape rooms and thought it’d be fun for children to have one they can do themselves, with or without adult assistance.”
The escape room called ‘Candy Chaos’ has a suggested age range of five to ten years old. Each team of up to six people has 45 minutes to solve puzzles and games and find keys to access the sweet shop.
Once inside they need to solve various other puzzles to find the missing ingredients to get the sweet machine working again. Once they’ve got the sweet machine working, they will receive a reward for their efforts!
Dawn told us that the idea started to form towards the end of last year and the design and fit out was completed in March this year.
“It’s very much a positive experience,” said Dawn. “Everybody will escape and receive a reward. It’s meant to encourage team work and get young minds thinking, all while having lots of fun.
“We hope to appeal to groups of friends and families who want to do something different.”
To start with, Star Street Escapes will be open at the weekends and during the school holidays. Eventually, if there’s a demand for it, it could open on Thursday and Friday evenings too.
The cost is £50 per session.
“If this one works, I’d like to set up more, for both children and adults.” So watch this space!
