The first week of trading for one of York’s most unique dining spots has been a great success.
Avocado Envy is the new cafe on Blake Street, offering a big range of concoctions made from the versatile fruit.
The owner Michael Brett, known as Brett, has said the response so far has been amazing: “I love it! I just really like meeting different people,” he said.
Serving every variation of avocado toast you could imagine, the unique eatery has adopted an interchangeable menu, replacing the least popular dish each week.
The current offering includes the likes of an avocado-bun burger and fries (14.50), a heaped tray of loaded nachos (£12), and feel-fantastic smoothies (£5 – £8).
One of Brett’s favourites is the ‘Fruit and Fire’ avocado toast (£14) , which pairs boozy chorizo with strawberries, a dish inspired by his time in Amsterdam.
Another popular choice is the ‘Boujie, Bacon and Balsamic’ avocado toast, served with fresh tomatoes, avocado, bacon, and 25 year aged balsamic drizzle, priced at £13.50.

Caters to all
There’s something for everyone, even those who aren’t the biggest avocado advocates.
“We’ve designed the menu to cater to a range of tastes and dietary preferences,” Brett told YorkMix.
Avo-less options include the eggs benedict, charcuterie boards, plus speciality teas, coffees, and a delicious choice of cakes.
Staff member Keira Brookes told YorkMix her go-to was the burnt vanilla cheesecake, “it’s stunning,” she said. The jammy dodger flapjack came a close second.
Avocado Envy has even managed to incorporate the super-food into some of their sweet treats, with the avocado brownie being a firm favourite.
Lots of support
Since the opening last Saturday, Brett revealed that the cafe has welcomed many hungry customers, and serves as a relaxed workspace for quieter weekday hours.
Brett worked on a cruise ship for five works before he returned to York, so meeting new people is something he’s always enjoyed.
“We’ve had lots of support, which is nice. We have so many nationalities walking past, it’s great,” he said.
With 20 years hospitality experience under his belt, Brett has always had a passion for food.
The idea of an avocado based menu came to him around five years ago, “it’s healthy, it’s tasty, it’s trending really well, it really ticks all the boxes,” he told YorkMix.
The business is already introducing some new exciting changes, with the addition of cocktails coming next week.
“I believe we get our licence next week, and we’ve got a Bloody Mary avocado cocktail coming,” Brett revealed excitedly.
