City centre breakfasts

Bailey’s Café and Tearooms

Linda Goode and Tempy Boon both praised the breakfast at Bailey’s as great, and Linda calls the staff ‘warm and friendly’. The café serves tea, coffee, and traditional-style breakfasts, just over the road from the scenic Museum Gardens.

Barbakan

Frankie Hayes was one to recommend the Polish twist on breakfast at Barbakan on walmgate. She says “You should go try it – they do Polish toast which is like a mini full English but with Polish bacon. The coffee is lovely too!”

Bistro Guy

Chloe Hildred and Helen Warry both go for the full breakfasts at Bistro Guy, which Chloe says is ‘amazing’. The café serves light food during the day and in the evening turns into a bistro. Once a month they also hold a ‘theme evening’ for customers, which in the past has included a ‘Japanese night’ for customers to try their hand at making sushi.

Brew and Brownie

Just two doors down from Bailey’s is the Brew and Brownie, a café and coffeehouse that seeks out local produce and fresh ingredients for their menu. Pam Stancer and Sue Gray recommended their breakfasts, and Sarah Hopkins’s particular favourite is their breakfast pancakes.

Côte Brasserie

Emma Aunger recommends the ‘full English with toast, juice and tea’ at Côte, but the restaurant also offers a more continental breakfast for anyone who fancies it, with pastries, French toast and croque monsieurs.

Kiosk Project Space

“Kiosk at Fossgate is the best for people that love and have a real understanding of food,” says Federico Reuben, a view endorsed by many. “In fact all if this talk made me hungry. I’m heading to Kiosk right now for breakfast…”

Mannion & Co

This bistro café sits just a stone’s throw from the Minster and boasts a deli counter full of fresh food as well as a wide selection of breakfast food. Ruth Murgatroyd especially recommends the eggs Benedict and mushrooms on toast as her favourites for breakfast.

Partisan and the French House

This quirky French café on Micklegate doubles up as an antiques shop, so you can peruse while you eat. Becky Harrison praised their breakfasts and Megan Barzag says they do “the best shakshuka and French toast”. Partisan also serve up speciality coffee – for a morning kick with your food.

Penny’s Bespoke Foodhouse

Penny’s was a new favourite this year, with the ‘best breakfast in York’, according to Joe Morris. There are a number of different menu items available to customers, and Yvonne Higgins recommends the fully bespoke breakfast available to vegans, saying she was ‘very happy and would like to highly recommend’.

The Star Inn the City

Natalie Chambers says for very special occasions, breakfast seekers should head to the riverside restaurant, The Star Inn the City. She says ‘breakfast is awesome and the setting is beautiful’, for anyone wanting a view with a side of bacon!

In the suburbs

Blossom Street Café

Beverly Hearfield’s favourite is the Blossom Street Café, where one can get a ‘big breakfast’ for £6, including tea, coffee, and ‘lovely service’. Perfect for filling up before a trip to the Reel cinema just a few steps away.

Café 71 Acomb

Robert Worrall loves Café 71, saying that ‘it can’t be beaten for quality, quantity, presentation and value for money’. The café offers sandwiches, fried breakfasts, and teas and coffees to its customers.

Delicacy, Bishopthorpe

When taking a break from making their own breakfasts, the people at the Pig and Pastry love to start the day at Delicacy: “Great breakfast butties and the staff are lovely.” Come here for home-made sandwiches, soups, cakes and treats.

Heworth Coffee House

Heworth Coffee House, on the corner of East Parade and Mill Lane is a great greasy spoon. It delivers a fantastic full cooked breakfast in a functional but friendly and clean café. Popular with locals as well as tradespeople, £5.95 gets you an enormous plateful with tea or coffee included.

Old Ruin at York Priory

The Old Ruin at York Priory offers “eat in or take away and sourced local ingredients” says Sharron Watson. Several other readers endorsed the Fulford Road cafe bar.

Pear Tree Farm

Daisy Wilson-Cooper recommends this pub for the ‘best bargain breakfast’ in York. Pear Tree Farm serves up traditional breakfast, traditional pub classics and a carvery every day, and on sunny days you can sit out in the beer garden.

Pig and Pastry

York residents can’t get enough of the Pig and Pastry on Bishopthorpe Road, with Rhino Neal claiming to have driven from 245 miles away to get his fix! Beccy Lightfoot recommends the Benedict Cumberland for breakfast, which is ‘like eggs Benedict but with Cumberland sausage instead of ham. Amazing!’

Robinsons

Further down the bustling street is Robinsons, which Elise Evers nominated as her favourite place for breakfast. Will Prime also loves this Bishy road café, and says his favourite menu item is the ‘Mexican eggs’.

Snack Shack

Steve Bradley praises this Fulford café as a ‘good old fashioned greasy spoon’. Though a little way out of town, the trip is worth it for a traditional English breakfast.

Out of town

Wolds Café

Emily Kirkland thinks Wold’s café is worth the trip for breakfast, with an ‘absolutely perfect combination of good quality food, a beautiful café, friendly staff and good value for money. Plus an excellent selection of tea’. Worth a trip if you ever find yourself out of town.

Honourable mentions

Some locations that were also given a single nomination include Bicis Y Mas on Walmgate; and Croque Monsieur on Fulford Road’s bacon sarnies were recommended.

Your Bike Shed on Micklegate and Cafe La Tazzina further out on Blossom Street were also voted for by one of our readers. And an early nomination came forward for Carluccio’s, newly opened in St Helen’s Square.

Further out, people mentioned the Farm Shop & Cafe in Wigginton; the Monkey & The Dog on Gerard Avenue, and Haxby’s The Curious Coffee Company.
