YorkMix and YorkMix Radio are giving under 18s the chance to make a difference in their communities with a brand new School’s Out Challenge.
We’re giving young people the chance to prove that they can make a difference, to learn new skills and preventing school holiday boredom! It’s free to take part in thanks to our friends at Yorkshire Profiles who are sponsoring the project.

The challenge
In groups of up to six people, we’re asking you to put together a project that will make a difference to your community. You can work with your friends to benefit your street, your village or area of a town, it’s your call!
The only rules are that the project you pick must benefit your community and you need to have an adult supervisor to oversee your project.
Your project should run between May 1st and August 31st. We’d like you to keep a log of everything you do so that you can submit a final project diary.
Everyone who takes part will receive a small award at an awards ceremony which will be held in the Autumn.
You’ll need to register with us on yorkmix.com to confirm that you’re taking part. You can start work on your project as soon as you’ve got your team together but the closing date for registrations is June 30th.
We’ll also be hosting two special days where you can meet other groups and speak to a team of experts who work with events, charities and community groups to offer you any advice that you might need.
These optional events will take place in June and July with dates to be confirmed soon.
The awards
At the final awards ceremony we’ll be recognising everyone who takes part. There are also some special prizes for the following categories:
- Best Overall Primary School Aged Group
- Best Overall Year 7, 8 or 9 Aged Group
- Best Overall Year 10 or 11 Aged Group
There will also be awards for special categories of community initiative - The Environmental Action Award
- The Local Area Improvement Award
- The Fundraising Award.
And of course there will also be an award for the Best Overall Campaign.
We’re here to help
We’d love to hear from you throughout your project and feature your stories on YorkMix.com and on YorkMix Radio.
If you’re organising an event and you’ll like us to promote it, or you just want to tell us what’s going on, email [email protected] and we’ll arrange an interview!
We can’t wait to see what you get up to and discover what matters to you in the area that you live in.
