The Hero Awards ceremony will take place at the Principal York on Thursday 10 November.

With thanks to our awards supporters!

The YorkMix Hero Awards 2022 are kindly supported by Yorkshire Profiles – providers of quality assured metal fabrication at the heart of North Yorkshire.

Meet the finalists…

The Environmental Hero Award

The Environmental Hero award is sponsored by The Orchid Vegan.

The finalists for The Environmental Hero Award are Angela Bare, Little Green Wood and York Gin.

Vintage shop Angela Bare is celebrating five years in York this year. Someone who nominated them said, “Angela has continued to put the environment at the forefront of her business while still facing challenges as a small business owner.”

The business has introduced a new sustainable fashion brand which uses recycled fabric for dresses which are saved from landfill. Angela introduced her own vegan footwear brand this year, and has started a recycling scheme once a month for customers to recycle footwear.

Cat Wood from Little Green Wood has “worked tirelessly to provide plastic free and reusable shopping to York residents.” The Poppleton shop provided food, toiletries and cleaning product refills. The shop had to close due to effects of rising costs and lockdown, however Cat “has continued to drive the environmental plastic free message via her web based shop.”

The New Business of the Year Award

The New Business of the Year award is sponsored by DBD Cleaning.

The finalists for The New Business of the Year Award are Craybakes, The Painting Pot Selby and Iris Graphics.

One person who nominated pottery painting studio The Painting Pot Selby said that “you’ll find a little place of calm, somewhere to spend a couple of hours to put worries and stress to one side and find your inner peace.

“There’s always a great choice of things to paint, great coffee and brownies and friendly helpful staff.”

Iris Graphics was founded by Eirini, a graphic designer and vehicle wrapper, in July when she decided to start a home based business after the company she used to work for closed permanently. Someone who nominated her said “She started from zero, in a market with great competition with other larger companies in York.

“I admire her for the courage she had to start a new business in these difficult times and how stubborn she is to make it work.”

The Inspirational Educator Award

The Inspirational Educator award is sponsored by York Sport.

The finalists for The Inspirational Educator Award are Nik Briggs and the York Stage Team, North Yorkshire Outdoor Learning Services at Bewerley Park and Sarah Colestead at Spotlight Dance Academy.

Someone who nominated the North Yorkshire Outdoor Learning Services said that the “centre not only cater for many of the schools in the region but what makes them outstanding is their commitment to support every child and adult that steps foot through the gates. Every child matters runs through their ethos.”

The centre runs projects such as providing a safe space for girls in year 7 who aren’t enjoying PE at school to talk about the barriers they face and to try new activities.

Alongside striving to give the “highest standard of dance education in York”, Sarah Colestead also raises funds for Spotlights Dance for All scheme – which offers subsidised classes, uniform and workshops to pupils who may be facing financial hardship or who have not had the most consistent start in life.

One person who nominated Sarah said, “thanks to Sarah, children have the chance to freely express themselves and learn to become wonderful humans.”

Congratulations to all of our finalists!

The winners will be revealed in our Hero Awards ceremony at the Principal York on Thursday 10 November.

A big thank you to all our awards sponsors.
