The Incredible Child Award
The Incredible Child award is sponsored by Fancy Dance Shop.
The finalists for The Incredible Child Award are Cola Biddlestone, Lenny Barlow and Rose Dearnley.
Four-year-old Lenny Barlow was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in September 2021. Since then, he has undergone many medical appointments and tests, and has helped to set up and design his own charity and logo. He recently raised over £3,500 for a specialist trike and funds towards his specialist wheelchair. Someone who nominated Lenny said “he is my absolute hero and inspiration.”
Cola Biddlestone, 11, has a rare chromosome deletion, is moderately deaf and has ADHD. She has recently been registered as a young carer for her younger sister, and helps to dress her, has learnt how to tube feed her and knows what to do if she has a seizure. “Every day can be a struggle for her as school is not always the easiest place to be,” said one person who nominated her. “We’re so proud of all she does despite her own challenges.”
Rose Dearnley decided to take on the challenge of Pretty Muddy Kids this year to raise money for her Grandad, who unfortunately was diagnosed and then passed away from cancer this year. “She is an incredible young lady,” said someone who nominated her. “Rose wants to do Pretty Muddy Kids again next year.”
The Outstanding Talent Award
The Outstanding Talent award is sponsored by York Mumbler.
The finalists for The Outstanding Talent Award are Steve Bullen, Harvey Stevens and Anne Lewis.
Steve Bullen is York’s Magic Ball Man, and can often be seen performing his juggling on the streets of York, or in street festivals and shows. Someone who nominated him said, “He’s always pushing in new directions and creating new characters. He is the sort of person York should be proud of.”
Anne Lewis is a retired social worker, food bank volunteer and the welfare officer at a local community club. “What makes her unique is that she has qualified to represent Great Britain in triathlon for the age group team having smashed race after race this year. She alway says it’s never too late and she rejoices every day in what her body can do.”
Harvey Stevens, 13, is passionate about dancing. One person who nominated him said that “Harvey is one of a kind, he is totally dedicated to dancing, his biggest passion being ballet.” He has been diagnosed with both autism and ADHD, and has dealt with school bullies but “his passion and love for ballet has overcome it all.”
Congratulations to all of our finalists!
The winners will be revealed in our Hero Awards ceremony at the Principal York on Thursday 10 November.
