York YouTube video of the week – the Sixties city

Welcome to our first visit to planet YouTube. And we’ve a cracker to start: a trip down memory lane on the back of a motorbike.

This is how York really was in about 1960. The film, uploaded by Teddyboy53Rocker takes us on a tour of the city centre and beyond.

The biker boys travel down Blossom Street, film the girls going to work at Rowntree’s, drive past the gasworks, visit some sort of milk/coffee bar – anyone know where this? – cross Lendal Bridge, go through Bootham Bar and get some petrol from the white-coated attendant at an old-fashioned filling station.

The cars, the fashions, the city as it was. It’s a bit grainy, a bit gloomy. But altogether terrific.
