A York writers group is publishing its first anthology this week.
Something Brewing is a range of works from 14 local writers in the Pen To Paper group.
Within its bright covers sit poetry, stories, novel extracts and scripts where the voice of each writer is clearly heard, lovingly brought to its best by co-editors Lizzi Linklater and Margaret Evans.
The anthology gets its title from their meeting place – the upstairs room of the Brigantes Pub on Micklegate, which closed during the pandemic in 2020.
Not only does the title fit the buzzy, busy vibe of the pub, but it reflects how the mind of a writer constantly brews up new ideas, focuses on unusual perceptions and makes sense of the puzzlement of life.
Something Brewing was accepted for publication by Seline Duzenli of Lendal Press, an imprint of the established Valley Press, and will be published on Thursday (11 August).
Seline said: “In this energetic collection you’ll find prose that brims with life: of York’s historical violence, personal tragedy, loneliness, yearning, fantasy and how kindness returns to the giver in unexpected ways.
“There is raucous humour and quiet thoughtfulness. And an astonishing adventure of a bear who crashes through any notion of seriousness with her big-hearted antics and subtly subversive ways.”
The launch is at the Basement Bar, City Screen, Coney Street on 15 September, where writers will read extracts from the collection. You can get free tickets here.
