There’s nothing better than a great afternoon tea – and one York venue puts on the best in the land, according to a global guide.
Luxury hotel guide Condé Nast Johansens has just announced the winners of its Awards for Excellence 2022 for the UK and Europe.
And the award for best afternoon tea goes to… The Grand Hotel in York.

The venue’s afternoon tea, served in The Rise restaurant, includes a range of sandwiches, including Staal’s smoked salmon, dill and Yuzu mascarpone.
There are scones, plain and sultana, served with clotted cream and jam. And sweet treats include raspberry and lycee macarons. The cost is £29.95 per person.
This menu will be replaced in the run-up to Christmas with its Grand Festive Afternoon Tea, with turkey sandwiches, a pork, cranberry and chestnut sausage roll, and patisserie with names like White Christmas and The Snowman.
All the teas can be upgraded with the addition of some bubbly.
The Grand was chuffed with the award – the only one in the Condé Nast Johansens honours to come to a hotel in Yorkshire.
“We are thrilled to announce that we are the winner of 2022 Condé Nast Johansens Awards for Excellence Best Afternoon Tea!” they posted.
“We are so proud of our team here at The Grand. With a range of new afternoon tea delights and an ever-changing seasonal menu, there’s always something fresh and exciting for guests to try.”
