Vandals caused damage to nine cars in neighbouring York streets.

And it may have been even worse had residents not intervened.

Wing mirrors and headlights were smashed in the incident at around 5.40am on Sunday (September 30).

The cars were parked in Grosvenor Terrace, Grosvenor Road and Newborough Street.

Residents woken by the noise went out and detained two people until the police arrived. One was said to be in possession of a section of scaffolding pole.
