York is to get its first branch of budget supermarket The Food Warehouse, YorkMix can reveal.
The food and homeware store will open in the former JJB Sports building on Hurricane Way at Clifton Moor. It is scheduled to open on November 5 and the company has begun advertising for staff.

The chain is owned by Iceland, which describes The Food Warehouse as its “bigger little brother”. The stores operate as cash-and-carry style warehouses, specialising in bulk discounts.
It is due to open on Bonfire Night, 5 November.
A larger store

They are typically much larger than the regular Iceland stores and the company has said its existing Clifton Moor store, half a mile away on Stirling Road, will also remain open.
An Iceland spokesman told YorkMix: “The Food Warehouse is our larger store concept, begun with a single store in Stoke-in-Trent in September 2014 and now numbering well over 100 across the UK.
“The Food Warehouse combines the convenience of bulk buying with great value fresh, frozen and ambient food deals across more than 3,000 product lines.
“The store also offers exclusive ‘When It’s Gone, It’s Gone’ deals, on a great selection of homeware items.”
Jobs up for grabs
The new store will create up to 30 jobs.
The supermarket is offering candidates a starting rate of pay of £8.79 per hour as well as a great package of employee benefits, which includes up to 28 days’ holiday and 10% staff discount.
Successful applicants will be trained in all aspects of the store operation ensuring they reach excellence in their role with potential to progress to a manager of the future.
Recruitment manager Lee Carroll said: “We’re looking for exceptional candidates to join us for an assessment day to fill a number of roles here in York.
“It’s an exciting time to join The Food Warehouse as we rapidly expand our business across the UK.
“In addition to some fantastic employee benefits, as a brand we believe in nurturing talent from within the company and have a number of schemes available to help ambitious team members achieve their goals. “
Candidates interested in applying should visit thefoodwarehouse.com/vacancies and search The Food Warehouse York. Applications for the positions close on Friday 20th September.
The western end of Clifton Moor had seen a flurry of closures lately, with Mothercare, JJB and Toys R Us all shutting in quick succession, but occupancy is now recovering.
As well as The Food Warehouse plan, Home Bargains is to move into the Toys R Us building in November.
