Joseph Rowntree Theatre is launching its exciting new season of shows for autumn and winter – which includes West End hits and a pantomime classic!
The new season runs from October 2023 to January 2024.
One highlight of the season is the Rowntree Players bringing a ‘rollicking romp of a panto’ to the Joseph Rowntree Theatre with the pantomime classic, Cinderella.
As well as featuring all your favourite characters, singing, dancing, silliness, and family fun – it will also star our very own YorkMix Radio‘s Laura Castle as the Fairy Godmother!
Cinderella runs from 9 to 16 December 2023.
There’s an exciting array of shows coming to the theatre with something for everyone.
The Bev Jones Music Company will be whisking audiences to 1950s Manhattan with Guys and Dolls (18-21 October), York Stage will be bringing the magical land of Arendelle with Disney’s Frozen Jr (1-4 November), York Light Youth are sticking it to the man with School of Rock (8-11 November), and Pick Me Up Theatre are bringing the razzle-dazzle of Chicago (30 Jan – 4 Feb 2024).
Tickets for the new season will go on sale from tomorrow (Tuesday). Tickets will be available online and at the box office.

Guys and Dolls
Get ready to be swept away by the electrifying rhythms of this must-see, award-winning musical. Featuring toe-tapping and hilarious numbers, experience the heart wrenching love story and meet the devious gangsters in their garish outfits, the stoic Salvation Army members, plus cheeky showgirls and dancers who will tickle your musical taste buds. Disney’s Frozen Jr
A story of true love and acceptance between sisters, Disney’s Frozen Jr. follows the journey of Princesses Anna and Elsa. Based on the 2018 Broadway and West End musical, Elsa, Anna, and the magical land of Arendelle come to life, live on stage. Featuring all the memorable songs from the animated film, with music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, this production boasts beloved characters and is loaded with magic, adventure, and plenty of humour. It’s sure to thaw even the coldest heart!

School of Rock
Based on the 2003 hit film, School of Rock follows Dewey Finn, a failed wannabe rock star who decides to make a bit of cash teaching at a prestigious prep school. Once there, Dewey soon discovers that his students haven’t a clue about rock and roll, and vows to mould them into a rock band to enter the Battle of the Bands competition. Along the way, Dewey finds romance, self-worth, a proper job, and, most importantly, teaches the children and their parents the beauty of rock! Don’t miss York’s premiere of this amazing production.

Cinderella
Join Rowntree Players for another rollicking romp of a Pantomime in 2023. Cinderella and Buttons are fighting to save the Windy End Hotel when the Queen announces a ball to celebrate Prince Charming’s birthday. But there’s trouble on the horizon with the arrival of a truly horrific trio – determined to find themselves a Prince! Song, dance and all the traditional silliness that goes with true festive family entertainment.

Chicago
Chicago is still the one musical with everything that makes you shimmy-shake: a universal tale of fame, fortune and all that jazz, with one showstopping song after another and the most wonderful dancing! You’ve got to come and see why the name on everyone’s lips is still….Chicago. Pick Me Up Theatre return with the merry murderesses Roxie Hart & Velma Kelly and a whole bunch of young performers in this Broadway Classic.
