What if we could talk with our own inner selves?
That’s the question being asked in a new play The Inner Selves from Black Sheep Theatre Productions, which beings performances in York this week.
The play, written by Matthew Peter Clare, director, musical director and producer for Black Sheep Productions, follows the failing marriage and mental health of a couple and the lives they’ve lived. Set over one night, will their marriage survive until the morning?
The Inner Selves is at Theatre@41, Monkgate, from Tuesday 13 to Saturday 17 May.

The new play is the latest creative endeavour from Black Sheep Theatre Productions, following a successful few years of bringing great theatre to York – such as The Tempest at Theatre@41, The Last Five Years at the National Centre for Music, and Falsettos at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre.
It stars a talented quartet of York actors. The four-person play splits the two characters, Henry and Nora, into four actors. Dan Poppitt and Charlie Clarke portray the physical bodies of the two characters, while their inner selves are played by Josh Woodgate and Chloe Pearson.
The ‘inner selves’ represent the lives that Henry and Nora have led, but also all the lives they didn’t lead too – their hopes and dreams, anxieties and fears, anger and love, and what could have been.
As tensions boil over over the course of one night, Henry and Nora’s inner selves will either make them or break them – you’ll have to watch to find out how it all ends.
The Inner Selves explores the impact of burnout, depression and unresolved trauma, with set design by Anne Loren Enriquez Comia.
Tickets for The Inner Selves start from £10 and are available via the Theatre@41 website.
The next production from Black Sheep Theatre is set to be The Hunchback of Notre Dame staged at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre this October – watch this space to find out more.
