See a new side of Shakespeare as Pick Me Up Theatre bring the romantic comedy Shakespeare in Love to York.
Adapted for the stage by Lee Hall from the Oscar-winning 1998 film, Shakespeare in Love is a love story about struggling young playwright Will Shakespeare and a feisty, free-thinking young noblewoman who helps him overcome his writer’s block and becomes his muse.
Cue a dose of mistaken identity, ruthless scheming and backstage theatrics and this will be a night at the theatre to remember.
The show will feature costumes sourced from theatres including the Royal Shakespeare Company, with musicians playing a host of authentic instruments – including a hurdy gurdy!
Shakespeare in Love will be at Theatre@41 from Friday 1 to Saturday 9 April 2022.
George Stagnell stars as the titular Shakespeare, alongside Sanna Jeppson as Viola de Lesseps – the woman who becomes his muse.
The cast also includes Ian Giles (Henslowe), Andrew Isherwood (Fennyman), Tony Froud (Richard Burbage), Robert Readman (Ned Alleyn), Adam Price (Kit Marlowe), Jim Paterson (Lord Wessex), Beryl Nairn (Nurse), Neil Foster (Tilney), and Joy Warner (Queen Elizabeth).
Shakespeare in Love is directed by Mark Hird, with musical direction from Natalie Walker.
Pick Me Up Theatre is an independent theatre company that first took to the York stage in 2012.
Since then they have performed a number of shows such as Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd and Into the Woods, the UK premiere of Stephen Dolginoff’s Monster Makers, the York premieres of The Addams Family, Ghost, Dogfight – and many more.
Tickets start from £16 and can be purchased via the Theatre@41 website.
