A store in York has been given a lowly 1 out of 5 food hygiene rating.
‘Major improvement’ is necessary at the Morrisons Daily supermarket on Barley Rise, Strensall.
That was the verdict after council inspectors visited the store in March.

Food hygiene ratings come under three headings. The standards found in Morrisons were:
- Hygienic food handling – Generally satisfactory: covers hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage
- Cleanliness and condition of facilities and building – Improvement necessary: covers the cleanliness and condition of facilities and the building (including having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control) to enable good food hygiene
- Management of food safety – Major improvement necessary: covers the system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future.
We asked Morrisons about the rating, and what measures had been taken to improve food safety at the store.
A spokesperson for the supermarket said: “We won’t be making a statement.
“However, we have worked with and supported our franchise partner on the issues raised, and are confident these have all been resolved.”
