A sports club that survived an attempt to knock it down and replace it with housing has applied for extra protection.
New Earswick & District Indoor Bowls Club was earmarked for demolition and replaced by 29 houses in 2022.
The Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust plan was refused by City of York Council and the trust then said it had put the development on hold.
The bowls club, on Tanners Yard, Huntington Road, was listed as an Asset of Community Value (ACV) with the council in 2020.
Under the rules, properties must be removed from the list every five years. Now the club is applying to be relisted.
The ACV is designed to ensure that the local community has the right to bid to own and run a local asset if its owners want to dispose of it.
A City of York Council report says the New Earswick & District Indoor Bowls Club is much more than a single sports club.

It has partnerships with the council, private and public care providers such as JRHT & Avalon, local and national community organisations such as York Neighbours, First York Boccia and Slimming World.
“Along with the bowling club that has almost 350 participants, 90% over 60 years of age, the club is a venue for leisure activities including line dancing, carpet bowls and keep fit,” the report says.
“A weekly ‘bowlsability’ session for bowls, carpet bowls and boccia is provided for between 30-45 adults with physical and learning disabilities.
“The club also has a flourishing visually impaired bowling program and a Positive Vibes group to bring together the 60 plus age group and recently bereaved.
“There is also social programme which includes, quizzes and bingo based around the bar facilities.
“Additional community activities supporting bowling sessions for adults with learning and physical disabilities, Special Olympics training for Yorkshire & Humber athletes and boccia sessions for Alzheimer’s Society and Age UK.”
Owners of the building, the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust, have made no representations about the application.
The report recommends that the bowling club is relisted as an Asset of Community Value.
It will be considered by Cllr Katie Lomas at an decision session for the executive member for finance on Thursday (24 April).
