Here’s our latest update on the shopping scene in York – with a trio of city retailers shutting down.

First up, news of a newsagent. Maynews at Monkbar, at 10 Goodramgate, has been left deserted after bailiffs took back the property for the owners earlier this month.

A notice on the shop window from Strikes Bailiffs Ltd indicates that the lease has been “forfeited and the premises have been secured”.

There is no sign of the lease going back on the market yet.

Camping shop to shut

Meanwhile, Yeomans Outdoor Leisure on Blake Street is closing down soon. A spokeswoman at the shop said it was coming to the end of its lease which would not be renewed.

The shop sells tents, camping equipment and outdoor clothing and is part of a chain with over 100 years of experience in the outdoor market.

Yeomans is now owned by Sports Direct. This is not the first branch to close in the North, with the Warrington Yeomans having gone, followed by one in Chesterfield at the end of January.

A notice on the York window says it will be closed by June. It asks shoppers to “please visit the outdoor area at Sports Direct on Davygate”.

A closing down sale is now underway in the York store so buyers can expect discounts and clearance prices.

Gifts to go

Another retailer to be disappearing is independent gift shop Gifts Which Make You Smile on Walmgate.

Despite only having opened three years ago, the shop posted on Facebook that their lease was coming to an end and they had decided not to renew. It will close at the end of March.

It still has some beautiful gifts in for Mother’s Day in the sale for savvy shoppers. The property is available to let from York Property Shop, at £9,500 per year.
