A number of York roads are hit be roadworks this week, including Lendal in the city centre.

Northern Gas will carry out essential work to the road on weekdays from today (Monday 3 February) until Friday 14 February.

Lendal will be open for deliveries and access before 10.30am and will be closed to vehicles from 10.30am until 5pm, Monday-Saturday.

Outside those times, metal plates will be laid over the workings so vehicles can drive along Lendal.

Pedestrians will still be able to access businesses.

Then City of York Council will resurface and improve footways on Lendal from Monday 24 February for three months until late May 2025, weather permitting.

The road will be open before 10.30am and closed to vehicles from 10.30am until 4pm each weekday.

Outside those times, works will be barriered off but access will be maintained. Pedestrian access will remain open throughout. Pathways and cyclist routes will be maintained, where possible, to allow access to any properties and businesses safely.

Work will pause during the Easter holiday period from the end of Friday 4 April and start again on the morning of Tuesday 22 April.

Other roadworks this week include:

  • Bootham Level Crossing on Wigginton Road – closed from Saturday, 1 February to 6.15am on Tuesday, 4 February. “It is envisaged that the road will only be closed between 2320hrs and 0615hrs each day of the works period. An alternative route for diverted vehicles will be signed during the works period via Wigginton Road, A1237, Haxby Road, Link Road.”
  • Marygate – closed from 9am on Monday, 3 February till 5pm on Saturday 8 February for flood defence works. “Traffic signs/barriers will indicate the extent of the prohibition. An alternative route for diverted pedestrians will be signed during the works period via Hetherton Street, Esplanade Court, Back Lane From Adjacent Marygate To 14 Earlsborough Terrace, Earlsborough Terrace, Dame Judi Dench Walk.”
  • Temporary traffic restriction continuation for Leeman Road and Kingsland Terrace from 6.01am on Monday, 3 February and ending at 6am on Wednesday, 26 March. Closure times will vary and diversions put in place.
