A much-loved York restaurant is marking a big milestone this month.
Karoo Bar & Kitchen, on George Hudson Street, will be celebrating their 5th birthday on Tuesday 25 February – with 25% off during the entire birthday week.
The popular restaurant is a ‘vibrant tribute’ to the spirit of South Africa, and is described as a place where ‘bold flavours, warm hospitality, and a deep love for community’ come together.
Owners Nathan, a proud South African, and Zach, a passionate Scot, have a shared passion for food and service and set out to bring the essence of South African cuisine.
After five years of living and running their own restaurants in Cape Town, they returned to the UK to continue their mission to create an authentic South African dining experience.
Karoo Bar & Kitchen serves up a variety of South African and European dishes – from Cape Malay Curries and Bobotie to lamb shank, pork belly and slow braised oxtail.
Nathan describes it as “more than just a restaurant. Karoo Bar & Kitchen has become a home away from home for locals and expats alike—a place where the spirit of Ubuntu (human connection) is felt in every aspect.”
However, the road to this five-year celebration has not been without its challenges – with the COVID-19 pandemic being an extremely tough time for the hospitality industry, forcing restaurants worldwide to shut their doors or adapt for survival. However, for Nathan and Zach, closing was “never an option”.
Now, five years on, Karoo Bar & Kitchen has a 5-star TripAdvisor rating, a 4.9 on Google, and a 5-star food hygiene certification. They have also earned a TripAdvisor Traveller’s ranking of 3 out of 723 eating establishments in York, alongside TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards for 2022, 2023 and 2024.
“This milestone is more than just a number,” Nathan and Zach said. “We want to thank the incredible team behind the scenes, and the loyal customers who have made this journey possible.”
