It is the pub that came back from the dead – twice.
And now the Carlton Tarvern is back open and ready to return to former glories.
The Acomb Road pub was threatened with demolition after its owner – pub chain Marston’s – agreed to sell the site to Crown Care.
But councillors threw out the plan to replace the Victorian building with a modern care home.
And when Crown Care appealed against that decision, a planning inspector ruled against the company, saying “the demolition of the public house would be irreversible and the harm permanent”.
Now the landlord is asking everyone to spread the word that the Carlton is open and ready to do business.
A really great food and drink pub

To all the friends and customers who have supported me and the pub over the last year, thank you.
It has now been confirmed by the brewery that the pub is not going to be sold and will remain the Carlton Tavern.
The last 18 months have been really difficult to run the business whilst the press have been reporting that the pub had already closed or was about to close.
I now need to bring the pub back to its previous levels and would appreciate it if you could spread the word for me and remind everyone that we are still here and still a really great food and drink pub, with new menu launch at the end of the month.
The news was welcomed by locals. “Brilliant news,” wrote Glenn Fuller.
“I don’t live in Acomb but love visiting the Carlton with friends who do the hospitality is wonderful as is the setting for the large beer garden.”
Sophie Magson said: “Our family love this place and it would have been terrible to lose you.”
