York Proms returns to the Museum Gardens this weekend – here’s what you need to know.
The much-loved picnic concert is back on Sunday 28 July, ready to once again entertain a crowd of music lovers of all ages.
Overlooked by the ruins of St Mary Abbey in the Museum Gardens, the event will feature a live orchestra and rising opera singers, alongside a spectacular fireworks finale.
Joining the orchestra this year, under the baton of Ben Crick, is tenor Joshua Baxter and soprano Jane Burnell. Joshua performs in opera and oratorio across the UK and Europe, and Jane made her professional debut this year and is ‘one to watch’ – both are currently performing with the Buxton Opera.
For 2024, the programme will feature a selection of musical styles – from classical greats to famous operatic arias to film music, finishing with the obligatory flag-waving, foot-tapping finale.
Organiser Rebecca Newman said, “I am really excited about this year’s programme and the line up of music looks to be one of my favourite so far, with a selection that offers something for everyone.
“The arias include some really big, challenging and stunningly beautiful pieces that will be a real treat to hear from two really talented and accomplished performers.”
Gates will open at 5pm for fast track and disabled ticket holders, and 5:30pm for general admission, with the warm up stage starting around 5:45pm. The warm up stage will feature some brilliant local acts, such as Lucy’s Pop Choir.
The main evening show starts around 7:45pm and will finish before 10:30pm.
People are welcome to bring folding chairs and blankets and to pack a picnic. There will also be catering on site from The Sketch Box, who will be offering filled flatbreads cooked fresh to order and posh hot dogs, as well as hot and cold drinks, and sweet treats.
The Northern Bistro will also be there serving drinks and sweet treats, and Ainsty Ales will be returning with a bar for the third year running.
