Leaders from York have expressed their condolences on behalf of the city after the loss of the Queen.
A letter of condolence will be sent to the Royal Family by thethe Lord Mayor of York, the Leader and Deputy Leader of City of York Council.
Flags across the city are flying at half mast at this time of national mourning.
Residents are invited to share their own thoughts in a book of condolences. A book will be open at West Offices from 8:30am-5pm from tomorrow (9 September 2022).
The Lord Mayor of York, Councillor David Carr, said:
“On behalf of the Civic Party and the whole City of York, I send deepest sympathies to The Royal Family on this saddest of days.
“Her Majesty The Queen’s loyalty to her country and the city, and her devoted service to her people, has been an inspiration to so many, for so long. Because we have always been delighted to welcome The Queen to grace York’s great moments, we now feel her loss very deeply.”
Councillor Keith Aspden, Leader of City of York Council said:
“Her Majesty The Queen has inspired millions of people, charities and leaders through her sense of duty and constant service. Her legacy is one of uniting people and communities through finding common ground over many decades, and it is one we must all strive to continue.
“Many residents in York will remember The Queen’s visits and connections to our city, including reopening York Minster following the 1984 fire and more recently in 2012 for the Royal Maundy service. As Head of State for over 70 years, The Queen has been a part of most, if not all of our lives including, importantly, a connection to our wartime generations. As Princess Elizabeth, she served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) during the Second World War.”
“I wish the Royal Family every possible comfort and solace at this time of loss.”
Councillor Andy D’Agorne, Deputy Leader of City of York Council said:
“My sincerest condolences go to all Her Majesty The Queen’s family. In this, the longest reign of any monarch, The Queen’s dedication to her role has been remarkable, through our nation’s many challenges and celebrations.”
Opposition Labour Group Leader, Cllr Claire Douglas said:
“Our thoughts and condolences go to the Royal Family following the sad loss of HM The Queen, whose service to the country is unparalleled.
She will be mourned for that service and remembered for the stabilising influence she brought at the most difficult times in our country’s recent history”.

“Her Majesty The Queen’s unwavering service to her country has helped to bond and inspire us all. Her extraordinarily long reign provided both stability and continuity, sometimes in moments of great challenge and instability for her nation, and her loss will be keenly felt.
