Lots of York and North Yorkshire people from all walks of life have been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list tonight, with recipients this year said to reflect the monarch’s “invaluable” qualities ahead of her Platinum Jubilee.
Those behind the selection process said there was more consideration for people who have represented themes such as youth engagement, the environment and sustained public service to mark the monarch’s milestone.
Here are some of the people who have been honoured in this special royal list.
Lisa Winward
Chief Constable Lisa Winward receives the Queen’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service.
Lisa joined North Yorkshire Police as a special constable during her time at university in York.
She joined Humberside Police as a regular officer in 1994, before transferring to North Yorkshire in 2008, and rapidly rising through the ranks to take the position of Chief Constable in April 2018.
Lisa is a national ambassador for volunteering, taking the National Police Chief Council lead for Citizens in Policing for a number of years. She is also national lead for women’s health and the intelligence portfolio.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “A compassionate and approachable leader, Lisa always takes the time to ensure that she is available for anyone who needs her support.
“She has always demonstrated true compassion, visiting victims of crime and underrepresented groups to truly understand their problems and overcome barriers and through her dedication to the public, she has made significant impact both locally and nationally.”
Lisa said:
I’m incredibly proud to receive this honour and want to thank everyone who has supported me throughout my career. I simply wouldn’t be where I am today without all of the people who have helped me, taught me, inspired and motivated me and worked alongside me in the wonderful team that is policing. It is a privilege to be a public servant and a police officer.
We really champion our volunteers here in North Yorkshire, whether that’s our Special Constables, our Police Support Volunteers or the many individuals who give up their time in different ways to work with us and both of these awards really celebrate that. To receive this award during “national volunteer’s week” makes it very special indeed.

“Sharron is highly regarded by her colleagues, and in particular her fellow special constables, which is testament to her exceptional leadership style.”
This Sunday, Sharron and a group of special constables will be walking 30 miles from York to Tadcaster to mark the 30th anniversary of the death of Special Constable Glenn Goodman who was fatally shot whilst on patrol in Tadcaster.
Sharon said:
I can’t quite believe that this is true and I’m not sure I will believe it until I see it! I’m absolutely overwhelmed to receive a Queen’s Birthday Honour and would like to thank every single person who has supported me and encouraged me throughout my career.
We have an amazing team of Special Constables here in North Yorkshire and I’m so proud to work with each and every one of them. They give up their free time to help keep our communities safe, working alongside their regular officer colleagues in dealing with a huge range of challenging incidents.

Rachel Semlyen
Rachel Semlyen, chair of trustees and founder of the Yorkshire Air Museum and Allied Air Forces Memorial at Elvington, has been made an MBE for services to heritage.
Rachel said:
I am extremely honoured. It is a huge tribute to the museum and all the amazing people who have helped to make it possible.
It is nearly 40 years since I approached the owners of what was then an abandoned and derelict wartime site, with the idea of restoring the buildings and creating a museum that would commemorate its place in history and the courageous aircrews who flew from here.
It has been a long but exciting journey to get to where we are now—a fully accredited museum, a popular family attraction, with important archives for researchers and an internationally renowned collection of aircraft.
With a degree in English and Philosophy from the University of Sussex, Rachel Semlyen’s career has spanned publishing, journalism, marketing, public relations and fundraising.
In the 1980s she was appointed York City Council’s press officer helping to publicise the new museums that included the National Railway Museum and Jorvik. She is the co-author of the only book about the lord mayors of York and their Mansion House.
Lynne Gabriel
Lynne Gabriel, Professor of Counselling and Mental Health at York St John University, has been awarded an OBE in the birthday honours.
Recognised for her services to the nation’s mental health and the development of the UK counselling profession, Lynne is a trailblazer.
Since 2016, she has been at the forefront of mental health services to the local community through the York St John Communities Centre. It has provided accessible, evidence-based interventions to more than 1,000 clients, positively impacting their relationships, families and work and is a model that has been replicated at several other UK universities.
As chair of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy’s ethics and good practice guidance committee, Lynne has been a guiding light in the production of resources for counsellors and psychotherapists.
Lynne said:
I am delighted and honoured to be awarded an OBE. I have been privileged to work with great colleagues and collaborators and I just love working with the amazing team at York St John Communities Centre.
I have especially loved working with our fantastic placement students and committed volunteers, who work tirelessly with us to provide excellent mental health services.
