Plans for a festive pop-up café at York Minster have been kiboshed by the council.
As we previously reported, the Minster wanted to open the temporary café in a shipping container.
It was due to be located in the lawned area near the Constantine statue, where previous Christmas pop-ups have operated.
In a planning statement, the Minster said: “The pop-up Christmas café will be a unique experience to the Christmas Market audience and York residents and follows the example of other major English and European cathedral cities whose precincts play an active role in their respective Christmas markets.
“The pop-up Christmas cafe will be operated by York Minster Refectory and will sell Nordic style Christmas take-away hot and cold drinks, refreshments and snacks.”
Any profits from the café were going to go to the upkeep of the cathedral.
However, City of York Council objected to the plan – and so York Minster have withdrawn their application.
A spokesperson for York Minster said: “York Minster submitted an application for a six-week temporary permission to use the land adjacent to the South Quire for another Christmas catering pop up, smaller in scale to previous pop up events.
“Unfortunately, the application sustained a strong objection from the council’s conservation officer which was going to lead to a refusal.
“This was a very disappointing outcome as the catering pop up would have brought in much needed income for the care of the fabric of York Minster, as well as providing a different festive offer in a quieter part of the city centre.
“We hope to work with City of York Council in 2025 to explore how we might use this space to support the work of York Minster and the city’s wider Christmas market offer.”
YorkMix asked the council if it wanted to comment, but hasn’t heard back.
