The exterior of York Minster will be brought to life with a free dazzling light projection next month.
The South Transept of the cathedral will be animated for an immersive show using a technique known as projection mapping.
Called Colour and Light, it has been brought to the city by the York BID (Business Improvement District).
The BID has commissioned Double Take Projections to re-imagine the facade of the Minster.
Using various animation techniques and styles, their after-dark show will bring York Minster’s medieval stained glass to the spotlight.
Biblical stories told through the stained glass will be animated and beamed onto the towering transept walls.
The light show will also will pay homage to the cathedral’s construction and include nods to local history.
Colour and Light: When to watch
- The free public show will be visible from the South Piazza of York Minster from 6pm to 9pm every evening from Friday 10 February–Thursday 23 February
- The show will be on an eight-minute loop, and viewers are invited to stay for as many showings as they wish. No booking is required
It aims to be a new and engaging way to showcase the historic archive, while emphasising the ornate beauty of the architecture.
Andrew Lowson, executive director at the York BID said:
In the current economic climate, we have been keen to undertake projects that attract people to the city in the dark winter months; as well as put a smile on people’s faces.
York Minster’s status as one of the world’s most magnificent cathedrals is something to be celebrated.
We’re delighted to be working with Doubletake Projections on this project and look forward to seeing the Minster’s historic architecture showcased in a whole new way.”
