A ‘tiny operation’ in York has scooped a national honour in the BBC Food Awards.
Social enterprise Food Circle York aims to “build a better food system from the soil up with our community of farmers, growers, producers and customers”.
As part of that commitment, it runs twice weekly markets at Tang Hall Community Centre selling fruit, veg, meat, bread, eggs and dairy – fresh and direct from their small scale producers.

This week at the BBC Food and Farming Awards, Food Circle took the Best Shop Or Market Award – described by the judges as an “incredibly competitive” category.
Joe Fennerty of Food Circle York told YorkMix: “We’re really chuffed.
“A few of our heroes – Hodmedod’s and Small Foods Bakery – have won previously at the Food and Farming Awards, so it just feels a bit surreal to have joined them.
“I suppose on the face of it, the project isn’t ground breaking. We’re a tiny operation.
“But I think what makes our work so exciting is the community behind it. We’ve got a phenomenal group of producers, we’ve got an amazing home at Tang Hall Community Centre, and a great load of folk who have really bought into our little, local, food economy.”
The market runs on Wednesday nights from 5pm-6.30pm, and Saturday afternoons from 12pm-1.30pm.
