It won’t be on any tourism posters, but York is the ‘dog poo capital’ of Britain according to a new survey.

The title comes after analysis showed that city residents complain more about pup ‘leavings’ than anywhere else.

Not only does York top the list in the UK, dog waste in here is also more complained about than any city in the United States, too.

Those were the findings by an analysis of Twitter data to see which cities tweet the most about abandoned dog poo.

The survey was commissioned by insurance website Protect My Paws.

It said: “Our data reveals that the city of York, a beautiful and historic city known for its stunning architecture and rich medieval history, tops our list as the dog poop capital with more dog poo complaints per 100K than any other city in the UK.”

There were 97.6 such tweets per 100,000 residents in York – putting the city clearly ahead of runner up Norwich (89.3), and way ahead of the first US city on the list, Pittsburgh, with 74.2.

The report’s authors added: “‘There is more poo than people on the streets of York right now.’

“So said a refuse collection firm spokesman in the spring of 2021. The streets were devoid of people as the city of York plunged into its third Covid-19 lockdown – meaning that devious dog owners felt less ‘watched’ as their dogs completed their business.”
