Plans to keep a health centre at Askham Bar open for another two years and expand it have been lodged.
The plans, from NHS provider Nimbuscare, would see the Community Care Centre off Tadcaster Road Dringhouses kept open and expanded if they are approved.
The centre would offer services including vaccines, coronavirus recovery care and blood-taking as well as hosting GPs and benefits and financial advisers.
Nimbuscare’s application stated the centre was helping to relieve pressure on York Hospital and reduce patient waiting times.
It comes after Nimbuscare first opened the site in 2020 for vaccinations, with the application stating that there were more than 600,000 visits from patients from 2020 to 2022.
The plans would see the centre expanded to include between 10 and 20 treatment rooms for patients attending appointments mostly around 20 minutes each.
On-site parking is set to be expanded to 214 spaces, including eight parent and child and 19 disabled bays along with 55 for staff and 10 for motorcycles.
There would also be 34 cycle spaces and lockers and spaces for mobility scooters at the front of the buildings.
Opening hours of 8am to 8pm, Monday to Saturday, would continue if the centre continues to remain on-site.
Up to 30 staff would be on-site while it is operating.
Services offered by the expanded centre would include primary care including GPs, first contact physiotherapists and practice nurses.
They would also include a children’s ambulatory treatment hub specialising in respiratory viruses and other collaborative primary and secondary services.
Blood-taking would be included along with other services which are traditionally provided in local hospitals and NHS health checks.
There would also be outpatient and community services such as retinal screening and DWP and Citizens Advice financial advisors would also be based there.
The York Council-owned site is set to be made available for housing after the extended two-year lifespan.
The application stated that the centre was designed to bring services which people would previously have had to travel for into local neighbourhoods.
The application stated: “The provision of vital NHS services will relieve pressure on York Hospital and reduce patient waiting times.”
